I was born in New Jersey to a very young girl, she loved me enough to give me to another family. I was raised by people who are my parents, only not biologically, just outside of Philadelphia, PA (in a small place called Rockledge, which is attached to Philadelphia on at least one side). After thirteen years of Catholic school I became a militant atheist. My high school was literally called Roman Catholic High School. I graduated form there with honors in 2005. It’s there that things get hazy, I started drinking all the time. I got jobs and lost jobs, thought I wanted a career in HVAC/R and realized that wasn’t the life for me. I sobered up in 2009, switched gears as far as work is concerned, and went back to school. Community College of Philadelphia was kind enough to take me as a student. I spent a year there taking whatever classes seemed interesting, including a couple of drawing classes. After that year, I decided to give the art thing another try (having studied art at Roman and some extracurricular classes at PAFA, UArts, and Fleisher Art Memorial). I graduated from CCP with distinction and an Associates in the Arts in 2013. That same year I transferred to MICA to complete my bachelors. In the interim I attended the Mount Gretna School of Art in Mount Gretna, PA. At MICA, I have been studying Printmaking.
Contained within the broad spectrum that is Printmaking, I have studied intaglio, relief, collagraph, screen printing, and letterpress. My work today focuses on these last two areas of study with an attempt to not completely ripoff any well established style while still drawing from job shop traditions. The essential format for my prints today is this: screened background, screened image in black, black type over the background. This style is still evolving, I have only managed to work out some of it this past semester here. With this basic format I can cover many topics of discussion. My focus in Junior Seminar has been adoption. Not only my own but also the adoption of my son to another family back in Jersey. This has all been autobiographical, and I plan to continue in a semi-autobiographical vein. In the future I plan to cover some of the topics of mental health issues in a biographical vein in an attempt to destigmatize the issues. Many of the people I associate with are mental health patients, or should be. I deal with
Bi-Polar II myself, along with some other things. I hope to be able to open up discussions on mental health and inform the general public of some of these issues by making posters about the topic in a style influenced by the old job shops.
I can see myself branching out from these two topics I have setup for myself already into other areas of interest in a collaborative effort with other artists or professionals. In continuing to work in this method, I would like to continue with my own areas of interest as well. The display method for all of my work is ideally flypapered onto walls where they can be seen by everyone who passes.
My influences include the Colby Poster Company (now defunct), Globe Poster Company (which is now the Globe Collection and Press at MICA and where I will be an intern in the spring semester of 2015), Amos Kennedy, KeeganMeegan & Co., and many others.
